In some ways, becoming a pediatric dentist is one of the most important career decisions that you can make when your career involves children. Your job as a pediatric dentist is to make sure that the child is comfortable enough with the dentist so that their trip is a breeze and you can show them that they will have nothing to fear later in the future when they grow up and need to go to the dentist. You are giving them their first dental experience and that is very important to them. Kids will take first impressions from doctors and dentists and go off of that for the rest of their lives. But what exactly do you need to go in order to become a pediatric dentist? Well, I am going to give you a quick run down to answer your question.
First, you are going to need a Bachelor’s degree. Every dentist needs to have at least a Bachelor’s degree before they get to become a full-time dentist. It does not necessarily require you to have a specific major but you are supposed to be highly skilled in physics, chemistry, and biology.
Once you have done that, you will need to take a Dental Admissions Test. This will determine if you know enough to be enrolled in a specific school to teach you everything that you need to know about dental work.
If and when you pass the Dental Admissions Test and once you have graduated from college and have your Bachelor’s degree, it is time to enroll in Dental School to get either a DDS or DMD degree from Dental School.
Then you get to move on to the actual place of work, though you are not totally on your own just yet. You get to move up and actually work on teeth but it is through a Dentist residency program. You will need to find an office that accepts students and dentists that are willing to work with you while you complete the last few steps.
Now you just need your National Licensing. This is another test that you will have to take in order to be able to work anywhere in the states. And to round it all out you will need to get your Pediatric Dentist License. Once you have done all of this there is an additional license that you can get by doing more optional testing that is the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry license. They will require you to take a few extra tests but this is completely optional and only there if you would like to make sure that you have every license that you can get.
These are all the steps that you need to go through to become a certified Pediatric dentist. Once all of this is completed, the only thing left is to find a dentist’s office and apply.
